Family of Legendary Nigerian Actor John Okafor, Often Known as Mr. Ibu, Revealed Details of His Extravagant Burial Ritual
An elaborate ceremony lasting five days will start on June 25, with the burial on June 28 and the wrap-up two days later
The legendary actor will be laid to rest on June 28, more than three months after his death in a Lagos hospital.
After nearly five decades in the film industry, where he rose to the top before his death, the world will bid farewell to the renowned actor in a five-day celebration that will bring his community’s culture and religion together.
Mr Ibu’s elder brother Sunday Okafor explained the delay in burying the actor, stating that the renowned actor will be given a heroic sendoff befitting his status, thus the delay in burial.
According to the announcement, Mr Ibu would be buried at his house in Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State.
“The Okafor family in Eziokwe Amuri, Nkanu West LGA in Enugu State wishes to honour the loving memory of our hero and legend John Ikechukwu Okafor who even in death has left a legacy of love, laughter, and liveliness.
“We would appreciate your esteemed presence as we lay to rest our son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and in-law on the 28th of June 2024. Kindly join us as we share the best and last moments with our icon,” read the statement released by the actor’s family.
Itinerary for elaborate funeral lasting five days.
The itinerary says that the ceremony will begin on June 25 with a high-profile match, followed by a session entitled “Mr Ibu’s Night” the next day.
“Mr Ibu’s Night” will feature a candlelight parade and live entertainment in memory of the late star.
On June 27, a Christian Wake-Keep will be held in the legendary actor’s estate, paving the way for the burial on June 28.
The five-day commemoration will conclude on June 30th with a church gratitude service.
Mr Ibu’s successful career
Mr Ibu’s career in performing stretched several decades, and he brought joy to many families, gaining him superstar status.
He is credited with the rapid expansion of Nigeria’s film industry, having appeared in over 200 Nollywood films, including Mr Ibu (2004), Mr Ibu 2 (2005), Mr Ibu and His Son, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, Mr Ibu in London (2005), Police Recruit (2003), 9 Wives (2005), Ibu in Prison (2006), and Keziah (2007).
