On Wednesday night, the famed Japanese wrestler, who recently shocked the business by departing New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) after 17 years, made his All Elite Wrestling debut on AEW Dynamite.
He joined The Elite alongside old friends Matthew and Nicholas Jackson (The Young Bucks), while Kenny Omega was ‘fired’ and ‘Hangman’ Adam Page was’suspended’.
AEW fans were ecstatic to see Okada make his long-awaited debut, while chairman Tony Khan wrote: ‘He is now business partners with @youngbucks in The Elite, and tonight it’s official: @rainmakerXokada is ALL ELITE!
‘Welcome to @AEW, Kazuchika Okada! #AEWDynamite’
Sharing the announcement, Okada simply tweeted: ‘Hello’.
It’s reasonable to assume that many WWE fans are shocked by the announcement, as many had anticipated that boss Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque would be able to persuade the distinguished former champion to join Raw or SmackDown.
Some have pushed Triple H to ‘fight back’ after missing out on Okada, while Will Ospreay chose AEW over WWE, and Mercedes Banks (FKA Sasha Banks) is set to join their adversaries on Dynamite next week.
This week sees the surprising debut of Okada, followed by the “surprise” debut of Mercedes the following week. @WWE, fight back,” advised @Sageof6turles, while @Danee_YH added, ‘I can’t lie Okada going to AEW blows. I understand the performance center, but I’m concerned that Triple H appears to have overlooked everyone.
While many fans point out that WWE signed CM Punk in November and that Bron Breakker, Trick Williams, and Tiffany Stratton are rising through the ranks, others remain apprehensive.
‘WWE is doing record business right now, so they’re not desperate to sign big name free agents, specially with the prospects they have in NXT, but from a Triple H stand point, I know missing out on Okada must sting a little bit lol,’ tweeted @sheslaydaily.
Another fan added: ‘WWE really had all the chips in place to land Okada and STILL he went to AEW. Don’t get me wrong, happy for him and can’t wait to watch more. But man, this is a genuine fumble for the E.’
‘For me it didn’t matter where Okada lands in the west but why am I damn salty that he’s not working on WWE,’ admitted @Crazhaze_, as X user JM Mendez added: ‘Still bummed Okada didn’t come for WWE.’
Even WWE superstar Shinsuke Nakamura, who is close pals with Okada, appears to have responded to the news by simply commenting ‘Really’ on his Threads account.
Of course, WWE is still in a great position, with lots of youthful stars demonstrating the future is bright alongside main event talent such as Drew McIntyre, Jey Uso, Cody Rhodes, Bianca Belair, Becky Lynch, and Rhea Ripley.
In addition to the crowded roster week to week, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has returned to the fold and will face off for the first time in eight years at WrestleMania 40 next month in Philadelphia.
